Part of my regular job consists of managing phone systems for a call center so I had phone technicians and spare 800 numbers readily available.
John was in search of leg bands, and wanting one bad! It was time for me to put a plan into action and give him an opportunity to obtain the best leg band ever! Sure enough, I started observing John and noticed the same investigative behavior. Scott made an observation that he shared with me, he said "Next time we bag some birds, watch John, the first thing he does is look to see if the goose has a leg band". Last year, we had bagged over 100 geese by mid season and not a single goose contained a leg band. Even though we usually have 5 shooters in the goose pit, I normally hunt with my good friends, Scott and John. Western Nebraska is a goose hunter's paradise and it is normal for over 200 geese to be taken from our goose pit each year. That my friends, leads me to my story…. A hunter's neck lanyard that holds their goose and duck calls is often strung with a dozen or so prized bands an indication that they are an experienced hunter. In addition to these bands helping game officials track migration patterns, they are often prized possessions of a goose or duck hunter. In return, they get a nice certificate from some official game department that indicates where the bird was hatched, date born, released, etc.
The lucky hunter can call the 800 number to register the bird they bagged. These bands usually have an 800 number imprinted on them. On rare occasions, a duck or goose hunter will bag a wild bird that has a leg band.
